The Casterton Football Club is one of the oldest country football clubs in Victoria, being formed on the 22nd of May, 1875 at a meeting held at Grants Albion Hotel, HentyStreet, Casterton. The town and people of Casterton are justly proud of their football club’s history and achievement.
After a league merger and the formation of the Western Border Football League in 1964, David Robbie returned to coach the Cats in 1967 and also won the League’s Best and Fairest Award.
In 1969 we again saw the Cats climb to the top of the ladder, winning their first premiership in the Western Border Football League with a good win over a classy Hamilton side.
In 1988 the club opened the new social club rooms. What a tremendous asset this building has been to the club and the town. This venture was a tremendous club effort with the General Committee donating $43,000, the Ladies Social Committee donating $37,000, the players Committee donating $17,000 and Life Members $7,000 towards the cost. It was also supported by club debentures of $47,000. What a great effort by all these committees who worked together to help the club erect such a magnificent building.
In 1989, Cats’ dynamic rover, Tony Lithgow, won the league best and fairest award.
The Cats started the 90s in brilliant fashion, winning the premiership in 1990 under the guidance of Coach Glenn Carol and played in the next three grand finals.
In 1999 the Cats made the grand final again but unfortunately they were not successful.
In more recent years the football team has been unable to claim the coveted premiership crown, but has produced a number of league medalists including Justin Monro in 2002, U18 medalist Eamon Gill in 2003, Reserve medalist Tim Rhook in 2006 and Reserve medalist Peter Larkins in 2009.
The club’s netball teams have also claimed premiership success, with the A Reserve team claiming the title in 1984 and 1985, 13 and Under side in 2000, C Grade in 2011 and the Under 17s claiming the flag in 2012.
